A History of Goodness: Selig & Associates Pro Bono Tax Representation

2012 Selig & Associates began providing pro bono tax representation to survivors of domestic violence. One of the saddest stories I ever heard, said David Selig. We represented a woman who had been abducted, raped and severely brutalized. Her assailant burnt her with cigarettes and broke her neck. She was profoundly traumatized and the IRS was garnishing her Social Security Disability check and systematically levying her bank account. After we intervened the IRS acquiesced, granted her a full release and suspended all collections. In 2015 we were informed that she passed away (may she rest in peace).

2012 - 2013 Selig & Associates provided pro bono tax representation to victims of Hurricane Sandy. Even though President Obama issued an emergency declaration for the State of New York the IRS continued to enforce collections and levy bank accounts. Attorney Bradley intervened and was instrumental in persuading the IRS to suspend collections. I’ll never forget the gratitude [name withheld] expressed after we got the IRS to release her bank accounts recalls Attorney Dorin. About two years later I received a tremendous package from Bethlehem Pennsylvania. Inside was a large oil painting of the South Street Seaport and an extremely emotional message of appreciation. It’s these small and special moments that make being an attorney so rewarding.

2014 Selig & Associates provided pro bono tax representation to indigent senior citizens and joined best selling author, television personality and journalist Rita Cosby in her support of the Wounded Warrior Project. I’m a former Marine said David Selig, and my son is a decorated combat veteran who fought in Afghanistan, and came home without a scratch. So when Rita called me I damn sure wasn’t going to turn my back on my brothers and sisters who served and suffered. I’m very grateful to Rita for giving us the opportunity to help.

2015 Selig & Associates provided pro bono tax representation to honorably discharged military veterans and at risk individuals. During tax year 2015 we helped several women of color re-enter the workforce said Attorney Dorin. Legal Aid and free law clinics provide essential services, but these organizations lack the resources and technical expertise needed to solve tax problems. We're a small, high-profile tax representation firm and the majority of our clients own businesses or are professionals. So it’s nice to do something for the less fortunate, particularly if they wouldn't normally have access to an attorney and tax accountant.

2016 Selig & Associates increased its caseload by providing pro bono tax representation to the disabled. Additionally, Selig & Associates publicly supported City Harvest, Pets of the Homeless and the New York City Coalition Against Hunger.

2017 Selig & Associates increased its caseload by providing pro bono tax representation to at risk members of the LGQT community.

2018 Selig & Associates will participate in New York’s Work Release Program. This program allows inmates who are within two years of their earliest release date to become reintegrated back into the community through Work Release.

Harvey Weinstein’s Accusers are the Real Sexual Perpetrators says David Selig of SELIG & Associates

Admittedly, Harvey Weinstein’s caricature could have adorned a German propaganda poster circa 1938.  But looks can be deceiving and in reality Harvey Weinstein is an extremely compassionate human being.

And because he’s so talented and so incredibly successful, thousands of starlets, ingĂ©nues and wannabes regularly tried to trick him into trading sex for stardom. But Harvey rebuffed their advances because he loves his children and respects his wife. So they retaliated and played the only card they could. It’s an old story says Selig, that of a woman scorned.

And now they’re coming out of the woodwork to take advantage of his good nature and naivetĂ©. And let’s not forget that the majority of Harvey’s accusers are actresses, and many of them have led debauched lives and are now indigent. Accordingly, they see him as an individual retirement plan or more apropos, as a big fat meal ticket.

In fact, some of these same parasites have been extorting money out of Harvey for years. He reminds me of an innocent guy who pleads guilty to crime he didn’t commit, says Selig. His story reads like a Greek tragedy. He was terribly embarrassed and was coerced into paying so his wife wouldn’t find out.

In a lot of ways Harvey’s situation reminds me of a Tax Case. For example, when the IRS makes a false allegation against a taxpayer, most people will think he's guilty. Even family members will have their doubts. Where there's smoke there's fire. And when the pressure is on, some people become so scared that they wind up doing things that they wouldn’t normally dream of doing. They agree to things that aren’t true, and they try to conceal their tax problems from their families and business partners. The IRS knows this is happening, but they don’t care because “it’s all about the Benjamins”.

The same can be said about false sexual harassment and hostile workplace claims. In fact,  most business-owners don’t even defend themselves against these false allegations. And when the lawyers are finally finished with them - the business-owner is left humiliated, vilified, and financially ruined.

In my opinion, Harvey Weinstein shouldn't have apologized because he didn't do anything to apologize for. And let me go on the record as saying that I don’t like the way Harvey Weinstein is being treated because I’m not into schadenfreude, says Selig.

And while we’re at it, I don’t like it when the IRS takes advantage taxpayers either. When Selig & Associates represents someone before the IRS we fight like hell, and we make it our business to challenge every falsehood and to quibble over every dollar. And when one of our clients is accused of a tax crime,  they don’t confess (even if they’re guilty). Winners don't confess, and they certainly don’t apologize. You need to protect yourself against sexual harassment and hostile work environment claims.
